History

Just to give a brief history...Through the efforts of Ronnie Wright, In October of 1988, a meeting was held at Dr. Higdon Elementary School regarding a formation of a Rescue Squad.

Concerned Citizens, related Agencies, and local Fire and Rescue Departments were represented.  Speakers expressed the need and methods of laying the groundwork.  Out of the meeting, the nine Charter Members began the process.

The first acting Officers were President: Ed VanCleaf, Vice President: George Hayden, Treasurer: Ronnie Wright, and Secretary: Cathy Murphy.  An attorney was obtained and the legal corporate filing began.

Fundrasiers were held: Yard Sales, Raffles, Turkey Shoots, etc.  The need for additional help prompted a membership drive.  Throughout this time, numerous meetings were held and attended.

After complention of the corporate filing, on June 6, 1989, the first regular monthly meeting was held.  At that meeting, 23 members submitted applications and were all accepted.  By-Laws were read and accepted.  Elections were held...

Serving as our first Official Administrative Officers were:  President: George Hayden, Vice President: Ronnie Wright, Treasurer: Roger Baldwin, Secretary: Diane Wright and Engineer: Tommy Swann.

Operational Officers were: Rescue Chief: Ed VanCleaf, Rescue Captain: Cathy Murphy, Rescue Lieutenant: Dan Hamlin, Rescue Sergeant: Barbara Tayman and Engineer: J.R. Murphy.

Serving on the Board of Directors: George Hayden, Ronnie Wright, Roger Baldwin, Ed VanCleaf, Chris Mattingly, Bill Todd, and Brenda Jones.

Committees were formed.  The need for training and experience brought offers from both Cobb Island (5th District) and Charles County Rescue Sqaud to either join or use their facilities to acquire the needed training.

Meanwhile, the search for an ambulance and housing, already underway, intensified.  An agreement to purchase Ambulance 829 from the Charles County Rescue Squad was about to be made, when the 5th District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad offered to donate/sell Ambulance 68 for the sum of $1.00

With ambulance taken care of, housing was another thing---after many disappointments and empty promises, Roger Baldwin, owner of Baldwin's 76 truck Stop, also our Treasurer, allowed us to establish temporary quarters in a rear bay, and also park a mobile office trailer there.

After being accepted as a member of the Charles County Emergency Medical Services System, we place Ambulance 618 in service on June 16, 1990 at 18:24 hours, and received our first call at 23:09 that same night.

For the remainder of the year, we have responded to more than 150 calls and with a scratch rate of less than 5 percent.  For comparison, in 2006 the Squad responded to about 750 calls.
